Sir Ian McKellen’s ‘Godot’ Costume Is Accidentally Effective

BAFTA Film Awards 2013 Winners Room

That Sir Ian McKellen. When he’s not showing off his Gandalf underwear, he’s somehow facilitating other people to perform random acts of kindness.

McKellen is currently rehearsing for the Melbourne premiere of Samuel Beckett’s “Waiting for Godot,” and his costume for the bedraggled Estragon is so realistic that a passerby gave him a dollar. He was outside the theater taking a breather when the Good Samaritan handed him a dollar coin and some well wishes.

He told the UK’s Telegraph, “During the dress rehearsal of ‘Godot,’ I crouched by the stage door of the Comedy Theatre, getting some air, my bowler hat at my feet (and) seeing an unkempt old man down on his luck, a passer-by said, ‘Need some help, brother?’ and put a dollar in my hat.” He added, “The dollar coin is now lodged between two drawing pins on the board above my dressing room mirror. My lucky talisman.”

There is a photo online of McKellen and someone dropping money into his hat, though it’s not clear if it was staged or simply another case of mistaken identity. Either way, it’s awfully good press for “Waiting for Godot.”
