Joe Wright in Talks to Direct ‘Peter Pan’ Origin Story

'Anna Karenina' Director Joe Wright Plots 'Peter Pan' Origin Story

In the words of Mugatu: Peter Pan is so hot right now. Everyone has a Peter Pan project in the works. There’s “Peter and the Starcatchers” over at Disney, directed by “The Hunger Games” filmmaker Gary Ross and at least partially based on the popular Broadway show of the same name (it’s something of a prequel); the Channing Tatum-produced “Pan” at Sony; and, we hope, another project that cast Captain Hook as a police detective hunting for a deadly child kidnapper named Peter Pan (this was once one of the roughly 9,000 projects Guillermo del Toro was once attached to). This is, of course, saying nothing about the phenomenally popular ABC series “Once Upon a Time,” which is currently engaged in a Pan-centric plotline that, based on the 10 minutes we saw while watching dinner the other night, is like an even-more-supernatural version of “Lost.”

But it looks like a new Peter Pan project could come in and trump them all: “Peter Pan,” from Warner Bros., has just locked in Joe Wright (according to The Hollywood Reporter), the insanely talented British filmmaker behind “Pride and Prejudice,” “Anna Karenina,” and “Hanna,” based on a script by Jason Fuchs (“Ice Age: Continental Drift”). According to the Hollywood Reporter report, Warner Bros. is incredibly excited about the project and eager to put it into production.

As for their take on the material, it’s being describe as giving the character “the ‘Batman Begins‘ treatment, imbibing the character with a big origin movie.” While it’s unclear if this is the best take on the material, Wright certainly has the storytelling chops to tell this kind of grand, fantastical story and even if it doesn’t work, well, there’s no way it can be worse than Steven Spielberg’s “Hook,” right?
